560 Diesel Smokes At Start Up

I really dont know what is going on as this is my first experience with a Diesel. We just got a 560 with a 301 Combine engine in it, when you start it up it fills the shed with white smoke. I dont know what to look at or where to start. After it warms up in a minute or two it has plenty of power and works well, I wonder if there are a couple simple quick fixes for this? You guys are great and explain things most of the time so a half wit like me can understand :)
thanks in advance for your imput. Jim

That is pretty normal. A diesel engine works on heat from compressed air. The white smoke is unburnt fuel because the cylinders have not heated up enough to make a complete burn.
Once the cylinders are hot the white smoke should stop. In the winter it will really put out the white smoke at start-up.

So does mine. If it really bothers you you can replace the pre-cups because I bet you they are all cracked. (doesn't hurt anything, just gives you plenty of white smoke at start up) but trying to find some not cracked at the salvage yard can be kind of tough. Enjoy the 560. My diesel has over 30k hours, and has only been overhauled twice, 18,000 hours and 22,000 hours.

That is perfectly normal. You need to keep the glow plugs on until the white smoke clears up. That is the way they were designed.

Higg: Your not holding the glow plugs in long enough before cranking. You should continue to hold them in until tractor runs smooth. Don't feel bad, 80% of folks do this. Seems like they think it shouldn't take this long.

I had an argument once with an employee, I guess he thought after we got the 1066, glow plugs were no longer necessary on the 560. I will agree 4 minutes is a bit testy when it's -5F, but that is just how long it takes. Normal summer time should be around 45 to 60 seconds.

You had to rebuild at 18K then again at 22K? Thas is a 4k hour rebuild... Or did you mean it went 18K then it went 22k and now you are over 30k? I am a little confused.

Charles: Definitely should have fired the rebuilder that did the 18K rebuild. The other matter that doesn't quite add up is hours on the original 282 and the 301 combine engine, must have happened way back at 9.5K

Sorry for the confusion. I was talking total hours. The tractor was
purchased new in 63 and was the main tractor for a few years, but
also ran a corn sheller until 1985(Dad sold his, but in 2000 I
bought one again). The first time the engine was torn down was at
18,000 hours, then that overhaul only lasted 4,000 hours. The
tractor now has over 30,000 hours, and I use it to do a little field
work now and then, and do a few custom shelling jobs in the
summer.
