Farmall tractor - What do I have?

New to the game. My hood says Farmall 200. However, my serial number is 2984J. By my calculations, somebody has put a different hood on this tractor. The Farmall 200 came along much later than my serial number. The J tells me it is a 1940 model. Trying to start buying parts. Need to buy the right parts. Any information would be welcomed.

Getting the casting number from the left side behind the motor. Looks to be original. Very worn. All I can see is the serial number. All other writing has been worn off. Have not looked at the seat base. Will look when the sun comes up.

From my understanding the J you're talking about is in the serial number and not the casting codes. In any case the J in the serial number does not stand for a year but rather an option, for example rockford clutch or something similar.

Now if the J was at the end of a casting code on the transmission case or bellhousing etc than it would stand for a year and be completely different.

Hope this helps you

Mike: Your confusing serial numbers with casting date codes. Tractor serial numbers are always stamped on a metal tag, whereas date codes are cast in place.

Your tractor is a 1955 Farmall 200 with a Rockford clutch

Mike: Farmall 200 serial tags are on left side of clutch housing. Letter series C and SC had it on seat support. One A and C size tractors it was on seat support until number series, then it changed to left side of clutch housing.

The casting numbers they are talking about are raised lettering in the castings like the block, transmisssion, etc. Look closely, they will have a month, day, and letter for the year. This will be the year the piece was cast, not when it was assembled into a tractor.
