so I've looked into his a little, what's the general solution for the axles? Do I leave them unpainted and let them rust again, paint them ?

Painting them prevents moving the wheels, and is just not done. LPS Rust inhibitor, or other surface treatments like Blueing, can work. JimN

I have a couple of cans of this http://www.neelyindustries.com/p-2703-perma-slik-g-12-oz-aerosol-can.aspx

I thought about using, it produces a graphite grey finish. not prone to sticking like paint, or rubbing off like oil/wax base stuff.

Do it. it works. Just be prepared to fight a bit with moving the wheels in or out . If that is not an issue, even better. JimN

That's one place I don't worry about rust. Leave them alone. Anything else looks abnormal. That is only my opinion, but I know what they looked like when new.
