Steiger ST310 - inspection and cost advice request

Hi, all.

New to the forum, lots to say... What should I inspect to determine pricing on a Steiger Series 3 Panther (ST310, ST325)? I see common price points of $12-15k, $18-20k, and $30k. Can't find pricing guides, and a $$$ subscription to a popular auction results service yielded a whopping ~14 auction results over ~10 year period. Disappointing... I'm an engineer - just want to plow/disk on a friend's farm as a hobby. Need any help or connections I can get. $12-17k is my budget. Any Steiger owners / fans out there? None in NE Ohio that I am aware of. Would like to see a Steiger in operation. Thanks.

You would probaly do better posting this on Red Power Magazine forum Steigers are mentioned there quite often. A Steiger is a long way from antquie Farmall. Caution.........some over there are not too fund of newbies but just ignore them they are really harmless.

I don't know a whole lot about them, but here is the little I do know. When looking at engine hrs, 2 four wheel drive hrs are comparable to 1 hr on a mid to large size 2wd or FWA tractor. At least I've been told that is a good guide to go by. Example: If you were willing to by a 3000 hr fwa tractor because you figured it had enough life in it for your operation, you could look at 6000 hr 4x4. The Steiger drivetrain is pretty much indestuctable (as much as anything can be, I'm sure someone will argue this). Hinge pins are one of the bigger issues. Seems like alot of Steigers are in to have those replaced at about 5-6000 hr range. We have a neighbor who has used them for years. I think he's running 2 or 3 now. All in all, I think they are well built tractor.

Not to brand-bash but for an economical older high HP tractor and older Versatile is hard to beat.

It is easier to roll in engine bearings or replace a clutch, on a Versatile, as well.

have owned and ran dozens of Stieger and Versatiles and both are rugged and very easy to work on, now used they are either worth a lot or worth nothing....it all depends on component life. If the artic points are tight thats worth a lot. Most components can be rebuilt with truck or loader parts that will be cheaper than OEM from CIH. Just be careful you can buy a $10 k tractor and spend 20 on it next week....my 2 cents worth

The only ones i know of around my neck of the woods in norhteast ohio are owned by a Jerry Tomace by Edinbug he is just south of Edinburg on St. rt. 14 . And i think there are a couple over east of Rt 11 in northern Trumble county and southern astabula county . Now you go west or south then you will see more . Myself i have never worked on a steiger or Verstile , No i can not say that totaly as i did work on a 440 Allis and it was a Steiger once but only on the engine and one Massey 1805 that i had for about two months before i sold it
