Super M pulling power

Okay I have a chance to buy a four bottom pull type plow and its 4-14"s. Will my super m with loaded rice tires and wheel weights pull it? I dont think it will but some people have been telling me that it would

From what I have learned here on the forum a lot would depend on your soil type. Also, whether or not your SM has 4-1/8" pistons (281 cubic inches) and stepped pistons - i.e., if it has about the same hp as a Farmall 450. In other words, I believe that plow is more suited to being a job for a 450 rather than a stock 264 cubic inch SM with stock flat-top pistons.

Depends on location and soil conditions. You would probably be better to stick to a 3x16. Like Red Mist said and that might make the 450 pant. If it had the M&W hi-torque kit, then I would say yes to 4x14 all day, any day, about anywhere.

like the other fellows said it depends on the ground. our ground is tough, two bottoms for an m, but less than five miles away the ground is very sandy and your super m would pull four bottoms easily.

WE always pulled 3 14s with Super M. Sometimes it just loafed along sometmes it had all it could handle, we might have sand on one end of field and red clay on the other so we had to size for the tough side. Had neighbor that pulled 6 16s with 1100 MF and we pulled 4 16s with same tractor (about 95 HP) but he liked to skim along 4 or 5 inches in ground and Dad believed in running 6 to 8 inches deep.

like the rest of the guys said, it may be too much for the tractor depeinding on soil conditions. however if you are just plowing up a garden or a couple food plots, she'll prolly pull it, and you may need to get down to 1st gear if the going gets tough. if your plowing 80 acres, the super will get a real workout and show it in the fuel bill too. another thought, many of the old plows you could drop a bottom off and make a smaller plow out of it. you remove the last beam that carrys the tailwheel and move the tail wheel to the next rear beam. i did that on a 3-12 little genuis, and made a 2-12 out of er, then put 2 plow chief lays off a scrapped out 3-14 hydraulic trailer plow. my farmall b and 240 u pull it real good for the gardens.

What are you planning on plowing? And what are you going to plant? Has tha land been worked in the past? Or is it native grass?
Send more info.

Sorry i was in a hurry and didnt get specific but i live in central ohio and the ground is mostly black clay and i would be plowing some pasture type feilds and already worked feilds but i apriciate all the replys. thanks zach

Back in the day we pulled a 3x24" #16 plow with a '54 SM with 4 1/8" Firecrater pistons, & dual on the landside. Ipava & Sable loams, 8- 10" deep in 2nd & some places 1st hear. Later we also pulled a 3x16" #311 fast hitch plow with a 450 with oversized pistons Same soils & depth, also with landside dual & in 2nd & 2nd with TA back. In some lighter soils we could move up to 3rd with TA back.

I have a SMTA with 4 1/8" M&W power done pistons, M&W governor, & M&W crank that last year I bought a #60 4x16" to play with. I haven't used the plow yet but I figure I'll have to drop the back bottom.

I don't think it would pull it very easily, but I think it would pull it. If it is cheap I would certainly buy it. I read on here once that 4 bottoms in second is always better than 3 in third.
With that said, your dirt sounds very tough to plow. Pasture is never easy going and clays are about the toughest to pull a plow in.

Hey, Zack..where are ya in Central Ohio..??

Ever gone to "Calvin's" on Taway Rd, North-East of Delaware..?
Dale Huffman sometimes pulls 4-16" with his M, (it is built for pulling) but he has traction problems if it is too damp..
Next event there will be around the 1st week in Nov..

Steam tractor running a saw , Threshing machines, etc, etc..at Calvin's..

What is this 4-14 plow you're looking at? If you can tell us the model someone can tell you if you can drop the rear bottom off it and make it into a 3-bottom as suggested earlier.

The ground where I grew up is about as tough as it gets and the Super M had all it wanted with 3-14 in sod in 2nd gear last spring.

Hi, i live southeast of delaware. I live just south of Pataskala and just north of Baltimore. But if you could send me some more info on the show. It sounds really good

Im pretty sure its and old case four bottom but its in the fencerow at an old farmers house down the road. It still would be neat to get and paint it up. I still might

I will find more info on the dates...

It is a two day event..usually about 60 acres available to plow..
They use their Percherons to pull a nice tour wagon out around the fields, so people can see the corn-picking, plowing, etc..no charge for anything except if you want something from the one concession (pop, hamburger, etc..)..
Very quiet and well done event..
