Outer Axle Bearing on Farmall H

I got my replacement bearing from the local bearing shop. They said it was a direct cross from ST-252 to BCA-1213S. The new bearing is "shielded" on one side. (I just learned the term, it means has a piece of metal on there so you can't see the balls)
I called the place and he double checked everything and said it was correct. He said I could pry the shield out if I would like, but the bearing was "correct."
What are your experiences? Did IH change to a shielded bearing? Were the shields in both of mine trashed from the bearings going out?

Replaced one on my super M, the local IH dealer sold me shielded bearing. Just repaced axle seals on my super MTA and both bearings was shielded

Spreader, Please see my axle seal post right above this one. I want to make sure I don't have any problems when I am done.
Do you take everything out or just the first metal seal???

Wayne, What do you mean outside? It seems like the shield would go towards the tractor side and the open side would go towards the wheel. This would keep oil out of the grease in the bearing.

There is a difference between a shielded bearing and a sealed bearing. They both can be either one sided or both sides. A sealed bearing is meant to keep grease or oil from passing through. A shielded bearing in not liquid tight. In this case the shield is meant to keep the grease in the bearing instead of freely passing through to the axle housing. Install the shielded side toward the rear housing.

That is what I thought. I couldn't see how the original didn't get diluted by gear oil.
Out of curiosity, was the original shielded and it just got trashed when the bearing went?
