piston rod side play

Have a Super A I have never heard run. I am fixing cam shaft gear so had to pull oil pan. Reached up and moved rod side to side on crankshaft and it felt like there was quiet a bit of side play. I have never been into the bottom half of these motors so I do not know if it is too much play or about right. Also, all four were basically the same so it was not like one was worse than the other. I have the numbers on side play but have no idea how to get a feeler guage in there.

Side play is controlled at the big end of the rod. Just roll the crank until the rod you want to check is on the bottom and use the feeler gauge between the rod and crankshaft. It is not a critical measurement. The only way to decrease the free play is to replace the rods and/or crankshaft.
