Guys maybe you can point me in the right direction I have taken off the oil cup and cleaned that out and it is ready for service again the question that i have is how do I get the filter itself out of the housing or is the housing and the filter one unit

The filtering media can be removed from the canister by drilling out the spot welds, but then you have to weld it back in. A better way is to remove the entire assembly from the tractor and place it in a 5 gallon bucket. Fill the bucket with diesel fuel and let it set for a day or two. You may want to agitate it every so often, then remove the canister and set it somewhere so it can drain and dry.
 

Sorry forgot to mention that this is for a farmal H Next question to follw up with How dirty in comparrisin does the filter itself get vs the oil cup and is it better to replace fiter or clean with diesel every so often
 
Operators manual (which you need) says to clean the cup every 10 hours and wash the whole unit in kerosene every 60 hours. Back in the 50's the air cleaner cup got cleaned about once a week, sometimes more often in heavy use, I do not remember ever cleaning the whole unit, probably should have. It sort of depends on how much dust you are creating.
