340 head rebuild questions

All,

Considering a valvetrain kit for my 340 gas. It appears the major benefit is to renew the valvestem to valveguide clearances in my thinking.

Do the guides require reaming to size after insertion or are these head in the oven, guide in the freezer and arbor press to depth?

Other than taking the head to an engine machine shop for valve seat grind what else am I missing ?

My experience on other engines says the springs, caps and keys aren't problematic unless they actually break...as long as the springs are and as slow as these engines run I can't see a lot of issues...

Thanks for any advice.

The guides should not require any reaming to size them, as for installation I cant help you there as I have not done that myself. The caps and keys are really no big deal unless they are damaged or broken. The springs on the other hand you want to check that they are within the pounds of pressure vs height as specified in the manual, otherwise the rest of the valve work is just part of it. Specially if youre taking it apart anyways.

Hope this helps you

You can buy a complete valve kit off this forum that includes new valves, guides & springs. It includes valve rotators if they're used on your engine. They're under engine parts that's under
"Marketplace".

You should have your local auto machine shop to do the installation. They can remove the old guides and install the new guides & ream them for
clearance after measuring the new valves. Then they can grind the valve seats. They should magn-flux the head for any cracks too & check the head for flatness. Hal
