IH 340 gas utility

Bought an IH 340 gas utility last fall (instead of a sports car).Been playing with it, taking the little things apart first, like the light bulbs. The water temp guage didn't seem to register; I thought it was rusted up. Replaced it with a non-OEM guage and replaced the thermostat at the same time. The new guage doesn't register either, even after hours of mowing. Other than a defective (new) guage, any suggestions?

If you have a small thermometer, check the coolant temp in the radiator with the cap removed. Of course you will have the cap loose before mowing a couple of rounds. #1--the gage could be bad---#2 the thermostat could be bad.
