Having trouble w/ IHC 424 getting air in hand pump. Can be working ok, loses steering usually road gear. Wheel freewheels (air in system?)Steering comes back. Replaced hydraulic filter in cylinder by gearshift, removed hand pump took apart and inspected, looks ok. can hear pump whining sometimes like low fluid. ckecking resevoir with rearward facing plug behind seat with fill plug directly above. don't have any external leaks. Been told problem must be in pump been trying to confirm that. Thank you. Mark

1.) Check/clean pump suction screen attached to fitting at lower RH side of 3-point casting. (Have to disconnect line and remove fitting/screen from casting.)

2.) Could be a pinhole leak in suction line or a bad pump seal (and possibly bearing).

3.) I have a power steering manual for the tractor. I'll take a look later tonight and see what else may be suggested.

Thanks Bob for your suggestions. Trying to locate pump suction screen. Is screen in diffential top(under seat)? 3-point casting? only 3 point I see is pto output at rear of tractor.Does pump pull out rearward? or is it attached in front? Thanks for your time. Mark

Names of things get lost in the shuffle sometimes. The pto is a shaft to turn things. A 3-point is a hitch system using hydraulics and linkages to pull and lift things. Your pto and your 3-point are not related. Many of the old tractors have a pto but no 3-point and some tractors have a 3-point but no pto. Yes, the casting that is mounted on top of the differential housing and under the seat is your 3-point hydraulic housing.

Sorry, I got this note placed above when I intended it here.
