Farmall A Belt pulley gear box

I have not located a manual for my A yet. Can anyone give me a quick run down on how to determine how many shims to put between the belt gear box and the differential housing? How do you determine the gear lasch to install the correct number of shims? Is it determined by end play or by rotation before engagement?

thanks,
Tom

Tom: This is a slow process unless you get it right first try. After you have pulley installed, remove the fill plug, and you can see those gears. Your supposed to be able to put a narrow strip of thin shim stock through mesh of the gears. It should be tight enough to form up the gear pattern in shim stock, yet not make any harsh gouges into shim stock.

Second problem, don't know where you'll find shim stock and in most cases they won't know what your talking about. Best to use aluminum beer or soda pop can. I guess in all fairness, those two products have put shim stock manufacturers out of business.

thanks Hugh, I figured as much. Some idiot had a belly mower on the A, and must have lost the bolts that hold the v-belt pully on........and he also owned a welder.

guess you know the rest of the story

I considered replacing the shaft only, but wasn't sure if I could resuse the plug in the end or if replacement ones were available.

I have a bunch of the shims if you need to buy some. Not all gear boxes needed them as i have had several apart that didnt use them. Like Hugh said they are used to set the gear lash. If you are using the pto you need to set the lash. if not using the pto no big deal on having the gear lash set proper.

thanks Gene, I have 2 that are installed with the old one, and the guy gave me 3 with the PTO I bought.

so the lasch should .020 or so?
