Donaldson air cleaner

Okay, here"s dumb question #101. Are you supposed to put any oil in the bottom of the mason jar on the Donaldson air cleaners? Don"t think I"ve ever seen any in one, but isn"t it the same principal as the standard air cleaner with the oil cup?

NO oil in the jar. It would make quite a mess slopping on the hood, don't you think?

what traps the dirt in the jar then? I thought if just a little oil to cover the bottom it wouldn"t slosh out and it would trap the dirt.

The cleaner works by causing the air to rotate around the intake pipe as it enters the bottom. The dirt is thrown to the outside of the housing by the spinning air. The dirt drops down into the jar where it collects so that it cannot be drawn into the cleaner housing again.

Have ya seen the ads or had a home demonstration of one of those whiz-bang cyclonic action vacuum cleaners that comes with the dirt tank that is conveniently clear so you can see how the stuff accumulates?

Same concept. But another example of how much tractor technology was ahead of its time. 8^) It's a matter of physics and fluid dynamics. It works just fine dry. Don't fight it.

That is a precleaner, the others are correct. The oil is in the metal cup at the bottom of the cleaner -- if you don't already know.
