826 Shifting Issues Resolved but Don't Know Why

I hope someone can help me understand why something happened.

The shaft seal in the bottom cover for the trans brake on my 826 was leaking. Draining is more like it! Not knowing if it was good or not, and not wanting to have the tractor down, I bought a new brake pad. As it turned out, the old one was probably 50 percent worn, so I replaced it. Anyway, now that I have the tractor back together and the linkage readjusted, it's shifting much better than before.

In particular, I was having trouble occasionally going from a forward gear to reverse... it would kinda stick between gears and not move. I would shift back to a forward gear, go forward a foot or so and go back to reverse and it would be fine.

Now, that problem is completely gone and the shifting to high, low and reverse, as well as the four speed ranges is much, much better.

I'll take all the positive results I can. Would just like to understand this one better. My only thought was that the clutch/trans brake were out of adjustment but I don't understand how they could effect the forward/reverse problem I was having. Ideas?

The answer to your question is as you said,"the linkage readjusted". It is important that all adjustments be made correctly on these tractors. When everything is correct they will shift easily.

Yes,thanks, but I'm still wanting to know why in a technical sense... particularly the forward/reverse issue.

A transmission brake that was set too tight can cause hard shifting like that. Shifting from forward to reverse or reverse to forward involves moving two different shift collars. A transmission brake adjusted too tight may not allow the countershaft to move enough to align the next collar after shifting out of the first. A confirmation of that would be if the tractor would shift if you released the clutch a little bit. That would release some pressure on the transmission brake.

A TA dump valve not correctly adjusted will cause problems getting out of gear or double shifting when releasing the clutch with the TA in the forward position.

I read your note while looking at the power flow chart in the manual and I actually understand it now. Thanks for the followup info!
