Chubby: I'll have to pass on the gassers. I do know they were a version of the IH 264 truck engine and there were combine engines very similar. Someone else will have to give you numbers.

Had it been diesel, I could have given you a half dozen suggestions.

A lot of IH 806 and JD 4920 gas engines were replaced with diesel engines from combines. Of course some parts had to be found to adapt the combine diesels into the tractors. As I recall the diesel for the 656 was the D282 which was also the diesel engine for the 715 IH combine and also maby the 403 combine. If you want to repower with a diesel go for it and enjoy!! I believe the 560, 6x6 series also shared some engines with the 706. My 686 used the D-312 and later oned used the D-310 German engine. At just under 70 PTO Hp the D-312 had a may RPM of 1800.

If I turned up the power and RPM to 2000 I'm sure I could have pushed the PTO HP into the low 80's.

I'd be careful about a bigger engine as your limiting factor is the amount of HP the transmission can handle.

I'd also switch to Diesel if not to to expensive.
