464 transmission problem

Having a problem with a 464 transmission (bought tractor new in 1977). Started a few days ago when pulling a hay wagon. When "letting out" the clutch (especially in 3rd or 4th gear; hi or lo range; forward or reverse), there is a very loud "chatter". This continues until the tractor gets moving. After tractor is moving, no noise.

Have removed both covers. No broken gears and bearings appear to be OK. When removing the fluid, noticed no metal in the fluid or in the plugs.

Rebuilt the engine about 4 years ago. During the rebuild, removed original clutch/pressure_plate. Installed an "after market" clutch and pressure plate. The clutch pedal seems "somewhat weaker" than when installed. Pedal "free play" is within specs; pedal spring is OK.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. The tractor is a 3 cylinder diesel. Have always used IH fluid.

I would suggest it is the clutch. If you have it at high RPM and begin letting out the clutch does the noise begin as soon as the clutch begins to move the tractor? And continue until the tractor and engine are matched in speed (clutch fully locked up driving the trans)?
If yes, it may be the clutch. Chatter, including both noise and vibration that stops when the clutch is in, or the clutch is driving completely is usually the clutch disk sticking and slipping on the flywheel and pressure plate. It can be from an oil leak gumming up the surfaces, it can be from a ceramic "puck" type clutch, and it can be from mediocre components beginning to fail.
Let us know the noise symptoms a little bit more clearly. JimN

Hi, I have same opinion as JimN. It is clutch chatter. Did you replace clutch with solid disk or paddle clutch like original. We always put 6 paddle clutch & pressure plate from 684 in 454 & 495.

Yes, exactly!!! Noise is only there when clutch is "going from in to out" (ie, like when engaging the clutch to move the tractor"). After tractor is moving, the noise "goes away". If I start out in 1st gear and shift through to higher gears after tractor is moving, the noise is much less, almost not there.

It is a "puck" type clutch and I am almost sure it's ceramic. I tried to match the original clutch. Wanted to keep the tractor as "OEM" as possible. Multiple drivers - didn't want drastic changes.
