Well I decided to up grade the old girl,in the past few days have put a pertronix coil, the ignitor has been on for 5 years.changed the plugs to autolite 3116 gaped at .042 dist cap looks good wires look like they are orginal, after inspection and instalation the tractor never started as good and better throttle/govener response. All is well right? today I decided to adjust the valves followed the IH service manuel to the letter.Again never started better after servicing the valves.Pulled the tractor out of the shop set throttle at half to check charging and for any oil leaks throttled down to take a road test tractor died out.A few things I noticed.#1 when pushing the ign switch in the engine turned over pulled ign switch out same but a puff of white smoke.#3 new coil was very warm to the touch.#4 pulled the coil wire out from the coil and cranked engine spark jumped the gap engine fired but died tryed the old coil no luck put my spark tester in line no fire with new coil.My guess bad ing wires any help?????? Paul

Sorry for the long previous post but I think I figured it.Pulled the coil wire an checked the resistance, zip. stoled one off the garden tractor cut to addapt, however this wire is carbon core tractor ran long enough to get it back in the shop but died. The orignal coil wire is steel core my thought is a chain is only as strong as its weakest link, need to up grade the wires. Does anyone have any input on steel, carbon or copper core wires when using the petronix high voltage coil and ignitor.Ithink thats why the coil was very warm to the touch.Paul

Two ideas: I would use magnetic suppression wires They have a fiber core with real wire wrapped around the core. The wrapping kills the static, the wire conducts electricity really well. As good as solid wire. The second component is that there may be a faulty connection instead of wire issues.
(or the Petronix unit is getting intermittent. If the coil is hot, it can fail when hot and work when cold. A second coil ruled that out, but if the Petronix unit is failing in the on state, it will get the coli hot. Never leave the ignition on not running. it cooks the electronics in the Petronix. Good luck, JimN

To jimN. Just when you think you have the problem solved, went back out to the shop to give annother try and guess what tractor fired right up but this time I was sitting on it,you are write sporratic primarry igiition short, ignition switch. This time when it started to die I played with the ign switch, twisting, pulling back and forth to keep it running,go figure.I was just about to pull whats left of my hair out. Thanks for your input Paul
