IH 340 ????'s

My neighbor brought down a 340 that won't run under load. Tag is missing. He thought it was a 1962. What I've found so far -
1. Don't believe the governor is opening up? Linkage is pretty sloppy. Found some info in archives on setting but it was sketchy. Can someone email me process.
2. Found about 1/2 oz. of rust dust in bottom of dist cap. Is this OEM for Farmall :)? Point spring broke when I moved the points. Point gap .020? It did run but crapped out going up hill.
3. Has Marvel Shevlor carb. Would guess a good cleaning is in order. Can you get a carb gasket without ordering a whole kit?
Sorry for long post, just want to try and help him out. Don't really want to buy manuals since it not my tractor.
Any help appreciated.
Thanks
Tom B

If you really want to help him out and get that tractor running, I'd suggest doing a full rebuild on that carburetor as well as rebuilding the distributor. Anything less will result in even more problems down the road.

Yeah, not really sure what your question is... You've got some obvious problems there that need to be dealt with.

OK lets try again.
Is point gap .020?
Can someone send me steps to adjust governor linkage?
Is rust dust just from condensation from sitting or are there other problems that cause this?? I've been here about 7 yrs. and never seen it out of the barn.
Will install new plugs, points, condenser and rebuild carb.
Thanks for any help.

Other than being beat up and ugly, it could be a pretty nice tractor.

Just went through some of this with my 340. Yes, the gap is .020.

for the governor I found the linkage going out to the carb had developed a lot of slop over the years in the housing. taking it to a machinist and putting in a bushing made a huge difference.

I had dust in the bottom of my distributor. replaced points, condensor, and dust shield... and remomved dust

definitely go through the carb.

my 340 runs better than it ever has.
