h hand crank

The hand crank shaft on my H is frozen. I'm assuming there is some kind of gearbox at the end of the linkage visible from underneath and the problem is there (decades old congealed grease?)Does a fix require the removal of the gearbox, and , if so, what's the best way to do this???

No gear box - just goes through the front end and engages the fly wheel pulley. There should be a grease fitting looking from the bottom up. You may be able to warm it up a bit and get it loose. Its either rusted tight or stuck with old grease.

If you get it loose, I'd like to hear how you did it. I've never seen an H with all the hand crank linkage free. I'll be trying to loosen mine up this summer and am hoping there's a method aside from using an OA torch (which I don't have).

On my 49 H the rod was froze up so I soaked it in PB Blaster repeatedly for a few days then took a hammer and tapped on it a few times. Also turned the shaft back and forth lubing it up with every turn or movement I could get out of it. After a little struggle it came loose and even popped back right away like it was supposed to! Worked for me but I may have just got lucky too!

DK 44H has the right idea. I soaked mine for a week or so with PB Blaster and took a pipe wrench with a cheater on it and slowly got it turning. Then with a 4lb sledge using a piece of oak got it to move. Then when it was all the way in I used a crowbar to push it back our. Repeated spraying, turning and moving it in and out it finally started working. I believe you can see the spring from underneath. I now grease it every couple of months to keep it viable. Henry

I too got mine to come loose with taps of a hammer and WD40.

I don't have a handle, but I bet it would start if I tried with one.

One of my H's has it removed due to the extra pulley on the crankshaft to run the hydraulics... but on the other one I end up hand cranking once in a while when the battery is too low to turn it over AND fire the spark plugs. Sure wish it had a magneto like the other one...

I've never encountered a Farmall with the linkage stuck -- evidently in my part of the country they hand-cranked often enough.

I had soaked everything I could reach from the bottom with WD-40, but I will try the PB blaster and keep doing it for a few days. The shaft at the handle does move a couple of degrees in each direction, but I doubt that the other end is moving at all. From the responses, it appears that using a lot of force, in combination with the PB Blaster, shouldn"t hurt anything(?) Thanks for the help and I"ll post the results.

PB is a much better penetrator than WD, they both have there place but give PB a try you wont look back.
