Cub Steering Gear Oil

I have an old red International Cub LoBoy that my wife uses for mowing the small area around the house. The steering gearbox is a little low on oil, and I don"t know what to put in it. It looks like regular 90 weight gear oil? The book I have says "steering gear oil"? What the heck is that?

90wt is fine. If it hasn"t leaked out radically yet, put 90 in it. Corn head grease or mobile 1 synthetic chassis grease is also often used if it leaks. JimN

The level in the steering gear housing was only down maybe a 1/4" from last year and is not really leaking much at all. I probably used 90 Wt gear oil in it last year too, but couldn"t remember. So, where is the "vent" hole in the filler plug? I don"t remember seeing any holes in the plug when I took it off and cleaned it all up? I have figured out that its a 1958 International Cub Lo-Boy from looking at the pictures on this site and comparing serial numbers. I bought it about 25 years ago with a bunch of attachments and fast hitch from a dealer to mow the grass with. My wife doesn"t like it and wants to get rid of it and buy a new 0-turn John Deere mower for the yard (about 3 acres).

The filler plug looks about like a "regular old pipe plug" but should be drilled for a vent. Take the plug out and look at the bottom side. There should be a hole in the center that goes most of the way up to meet another hole that is cross drilled through the square part of the plug. They are often filled with dirt/oil and the cross drilled hole painted shut.

If there is no vent hole, the original has been replaced with a pipe plug.

I found the vent holes. Thanks a lot. I never noticed the holes in there before, even when I took the plug out and cleaned it off with a brush and some gasoline, and then blew it out with air. But its clear now.
