Disk size for Farmall A/B

I use a 7ft pull disk for my Farmall H, and wanting to do a restoration on the H. Since i wont be able to use it, I have a Farmall B thats been redone but sits in the garage till time for parades. I"m wanting to get the B out and work it, but having a hard time trying to find a 4ft/5ft pull disk for it. Will it be able to pull a 6ft disk? or should i continue to look for 4ft/5ft disk? I found a 6ft but realy dont know what size i should use on the farmall B.

I would think the problem with a narrow disk behind a Farmall B is that the tire tread is wider than the disk. Roger

If you turn your rear wheels in and mount your rims to the inside with the offset to the inside, you'll be 64" to the center of your tires. If you've got 9.5x24s on that'll put you at 73+", probably acceptable for a 6' disc if you've got a steady hand and eye. Any narrower and you won't be breaking up your rear tracks.

I have an A and the disc it came with new from the dealer, a 6 ft. It doesn't seem to notice it too much. (you can't seem to get enough weight on it to really get deep enough for a lot of draft). I think a B should do alright with a 7 ft.

As a kid, the first thing Dad let me do with "tillage tools" was disc corn stalks with a C and 7' tandem JD disc. It would not pull it in plowed ground, but would in stalks where it would not cut very deep. I doubt a B would do very good under most conditions with a 7' disc. How about an 8 or 10' single disc instead of a tandem? Takes care of discing out the tire tracks.

bleed red: As Scotty said, wheels dished in and 9.5 tires you'll be down to 73" overall width. A good cutting 6' disk will stop you. The thing about tillage is traction, and more rubber on the ground will do you more good than added weight.

I pull a 6'5", 20 - 18" blades with my 130 or 140, and both have 12.4x24 tires. I get along very well, but very ocasionally run out of traction. Recently we had this same discussion on big tractors, and it's really no different, rubber on the ground is your traction. There have been countless farmers with 60-150 hp tractors dumped the chloride and weights, then added duals and were amazed by the performance disking. I know I couldn't believe the difference in my 1066, back 33 years ago. This is exactly why my 130 and 140 have 12.4x24 tires. The extra width, plus added circumference has the same effect as dualing a 9.5x24.

This width is one of the problems with a Farmall B, you just can't get that width down to match weight, power and traction required for tillage work. You can do it with a Farmall A, because you can reduce the width. What you need is a 4 wheel drive unit for the B. Call Gene Bender, he will build you a 4x4 Farmall B, he has the technology, at least he's done every thing imaginable with a B.

Yes why noy a 4 wheel drive on a BN Just use the front assy from a pickup and go for it put a 135 cuin engine and realy smoke em. Now Hugh dont need any more projects but that one would be fun. Run shaft from pto put Power steer also and three pt. 7FT single disc would be all a b needs although i do have an 8ft wheel disc i made and in plowed garden the 11.2 still could use more traction Maybe ill just put duals on then i couldnt get thru the door. Been thinking about dual 8.3s on an A.

Depends on what you are discing did pull an 8ft tandem in cornstalks long rime ago with wts did all right but in plowed ground the 6ft will be enough as Hugh says traction is the thing
