farmall 450 diesel

my 450 diesel has a rebuilt injection pump but it misses with the engine at any speed and dosent smoke. but when i put it under a load it fires on all cylinders and has the blackest thickest smoke, it would keep up with pulling tractors as far as exhaust goes. is it a bad injector or to much fuel.

Likely a bad injector nozzle. Had a 350 done the same thing.

IF you have a miss under a no load condition then i hate to tell ya this it's the cam bearing in the pump , and over the years i have found that not to many pump shops can work on the old pumps . I went thru the same thing many years ago when i had a 450 and back then i was still learning I H tractors . And to this day i learned just how back some pump shops will stick a bone in ya and flat out and lie . After having a bunch of BAD advice and after a bunch of work what i found on my tractor was that the pump was bad. So off came the pump and i took it to a place in Youngstown Ohio called Diesel Injection and Fat Dave says Oh yea i can fix it . Well he calls me at work and starts to tell me that OH it is this and that that is bad and it is going to cost ya 750 bucks , Now this is back in 1969 , I only paid a 1000 for the tractor . Alot of money back then as ya could buy and new car for 2500 . Well i was dumb and told him that it has to be done by 5 friday . Friday comes and i go to get my pump . Well it is not done and i get the song and dance that OH i am waiting for parts . I have a bad temper and i let loose on him and made him put it back together and out the door i went with the pump running late . Used the tractor all weekend and pulled it off again late Sunday night and put it in the trunk of my car. On the way to work monday morning i am going past the I H industrial dealer and the thought hit me that hey they must work on I H pumps for the dozers and such. Turned around and pulled into the lot and went inside and asked the one girl and she said that yes just take the pump on back into the shop and look up old Cal. Do out to the car and get that ingot of a pump out and lug it into the shop and the gys pointed to this door and i walk in and set the pump down on the bench and this OLD TIMER looks over the rim of his glasses and points to a pump setting on the shelf . He says take that one , i asked how much , he says don't know , He tells me that what ever it takes to fix my oump is what that YELLOW one cost . Wel i tell him that a YELLOW pump on a red tractor might raise a few eyebrows at the Pulls . He loks at me and say WHAT i said ya know Tractor Pulls and just how much can ya give me extra . He tells me that he will see what he can do and to give him my work # and he will call . Well made a mad dash to work and at 11:30 i get a call and it is Old Cal , Hey your pump is done , what already , yep it's done and i think you will like it , now the big question how much . Oh i had to replace the bushing on the cam and put a couple seals in it and i used some old fly weights out of a TD 14 loader pump to make things happen faster and i did this and that and when is the next pull i want ot come watch. and the bill is 112.78 , now wait a min here FAT DAVE said it was going to be 750 buck , Well he was trying to get into your nickers . Well Old Cal has long since passed and i have a place that can do as good as OLD CAL but like anything today ya ain't going to get off for a 112.78 and he is a OLD TIMER I H mechanic that started a pump shop But it is across the line in Pa.
