I'M JUST GETTING INTO THIS.I HAVE A FARMALL 460 AND AFTER AN HOUR OF MOWING PASTURE IT DIED.WAITED A FEW MINUTES WOULD RESTART AND RUN ALITTLE WHILE LONGER.FINALLY I WAS ABLE TO GET TO THE SHED AND CHARGED THE BATTERY,IT RAN FINE AFTER THAT.I'M GUESSING THAT I HAVE A CHARGING PROBLEM BUT DON'T KNOW WHERE TO BEGIN TO CHECK IT OUT.ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED. THANKS!

That's a 221 engine and I would check the coil out first. Go to points and condensor then.
Does it try to back fire first before going dead?
If so check fuel flow to carb. Just My opinion. I've run a 460 with 221 for over 30 years now. Good engine but as all engines, some little something can cause a head ache.

thanks Jerry! it doesn"t back fire just starts to lug down until it dies.Like lack of fuel or something.
how would i check the coil and that? Thanks again!!

Newbinia: Could it be fuel related? Hows the fuel flow from the sediment bowl? And again at the carb inlet? And how does the fuel flow out of the drain plug at the bottom of carb? Does it have a add on fuel filter? These give ppl lots of similar symptoms. Reason is most supply places carry auto type inline filters that needs pump pressure and tractors are gravity fed. Trash in tank? Farmer fuel gauge (stick) have invaded countless fuel tanks (including mine) and break down and plug outlet of tank and sediment bowl. Let us know what you find

The charging gurus will help ya trace you charging wows. Hang in there Help is here Email is open tho I have an older model (400)

Or rust.

Hmm, charging the battery may be a red herring. The coil would cool down in the hours that it takes to charge the battery.

It's pretty easy to tell if you've got a charging problem. What does the Amp meter show? If the needle doesn't go to the right when the tractor starts, either the meter is broke or it's not charging. If the meter is broke, replace it. You can get a generic gauge set from Harbor Freight for $16.99 which includes ammeter, oil pressure gauge, and water temperature gauge. They fit and work fine, so there is no excuse for not having working gauges.

Run the tractor until it dies again and feel the coil. You'll likely burn yourself if you're not careful.

Or, just replace the coil. It's not a huge expense. For $30 you can eliminate it as the cause of your problems.

Use a volt meter across your battery terminals and with the engine at 1/2 throttle or better see what the charging voltage is. shouD be around 14 volts on it if its a 12 volt system. Could be the coil too. When ir quits running you need to check for to fire to your plugs ASAP before it has a chance to cool. Hal

I just had my 460 utility die while idling on a slight incline while loading the bucket with a pile of sticks.

It was trash in the tank, just a few drips coming out at the carb, and same thing at the fuel bowl when it was removed.

For a quick fix, I exhaled back into the tank thru the hose to clear things up and get running, but the same piece of trash is likely still in there for later.

Best way is to get another coil and try it. Those coils can be tricky, as they will be ok some of the time and not others.
Good Luck

i have a international 424, i had the same problem. after using it for twenty minutes it would spit and sputter and quit like it was starved for fuel. It has an electric fuel pump. I checked and changed several things. The last thing I checked was the Generator. I had it tested and it was shot. I replaced it and finished the year without a problem. The next year it started again. I changed over to an alternator and it's been fine for two years. I can spend all day in the hayfield w/o a problem. I asked someone and they said, it wasn't putting enough juice to the fuel pump to push the fuel to the carburetor to keep it running. I still have a problem but not the problem i mentioned above anymore. The alternator helped me. Good luck.

HOW WOULD I CHECK THE GENERATOR,VOLTAGE REGULATOR
AND IF POSSIBLE WHAT WOULD I HAVE TO DO TO SWITCH OVER TO AN ALTERNATOR.ANY INSTRUCTIONS OR PART NUMBERS WOULD GREATLY BE APPRECIATED. THANKS FOR EVERYONE"S INPUT

LOOK AT THE AMP METER!

If the Amp meter shows a charge while the tractor is running, then it is working!!!

If the Amp meter is broken or missing, spend $15 and replace it. Any generic 2" Amp meter will work fine. You can get them off the shelf at any auto parts store. It doesn't have to say IH.
