Farmall H rear seal leaking

Rear end oil is leaking out of the rear seal on the clutch drive shaft. Can I replace this seal without taking the hydralic pump out? I noticed all the bolts are loose that connect the drive shaft to the rear end. Why would this be? I can move the shaft up and down at this connection. Any input on what to do would be greatly appreciated.

I don't think there is room to replace the front transmission seal without removing the clutch shaft. To remove the clutch shaft, you will have to remove the hydraulic Lift All. If the bolts that are loose are the four bolts in the main drive shaft coupler, it could mean the holes in the coupling plate are wallowed out and you may need a new plate. Those bolts are tapered shoulder bolts and should be wedged solidly into the coupling pieces that are on the shaft. The transmission seal runs on the coupling piece, not on the shaft itself. It is retained to the transmission input shaft with a bolt and is keyed to the shaft. Not usually to difficult to get this off, but I don't think there is room to get it off without removing the clutch shaft which as I said before will require that the Lift all be taken out. If you can move the transmission input shaft up and down with the clutch shaft, then you are going to need new bearings on the input shaft as well as a seal. Also, you will likely need new rubber washers for the coupling.

I just replace my seals and bearings top and bottom on my 44 H. Did not have to take the clutch shaft out to do it on the H. Now on my M I did before the H I did have to take the clutch out. But I would still take out the pump to make it easier. Good luck and if you have any questions let us know.
