Farmall M Front Hubs Wheels

I’m working on my 1951 M, and it’s time for the front wheels to be painted and new tires. For some reason, the hub was welded to the rim at some point in the last 58 years. Is it worth the effort to try to save both pieces, or just one of them? Any logical reason why they were welded together?

Looking at eBay, I can get a hub for about $55, front rim for $150+, so I’m thinking this might be the end of the road for this hub, and I’ll work to save the rim and the ears on it. Does this seem right too? Are H hubs the same?

If anybody on here has either part, shoot me an e-mail.

Thanks

angle grinder and die grinder with lots of patience will get that apart. If your not concerned about original looks,My self I would mount tire on assy and leave well enough alone. Some people should not get their hands on a welder. When you do get that apart use new 5/8 bolts worst case senario holes slopped out drill to 3/4. Good luck Scott

I found the rim lugs welded to one of the rear wheels on my BN. Had to sacrifice the lugs to get the two apart. Turns out that the bolts had apparently gotten loose on one of them, and they ran it for long enough that way that they egged out the holes on the wheel. Their answer was to weld the rim to the wheel.

I suspect if you were to burn out the weld, you'd find either the rim or the wheel egged out or buggered up some other way.

I mentioned it in my answer to your question about the rear wheel over on Tractor Talk, and it's even more imprtant on a front wheel, with it being smaller - - -

If you're going to cut that weld or put any kind of serious heat to it, let the air out of the tire and remove the valve core from the stem. You might even try to break the bead before starting, too.

The f
Farmall H and Farmall M front hubs are NOT the same. In some rare instances you might find an M with the lighter duty H front hubs, but I have never found one. The wheel bearings will NOT interchange either.

I'm with the other guys on the welds. Get out your angle grinder and grind away that welding.

your front wheels were ran loose and hogged the holes out and wouldn't stay tight, so the previous owner welded them together. problam solved until you wanted to take them apart. if you want to buy different ones get a pair from a super m or 400 or 450. they are the full thickness at the bolt holes and are cast a little bigger around and then machined down to fit the rim with no slop.

i'd try and save both. a thin cut off wheel will zip right thru the welds. if the holes are wallowed out, you can pick up some bushings and resize the holes.

I would try to save both the hub and rim. Grind or cut the weld away, seperate rim and hub, grind rest of weld off. The holes in the hub don't look that bad. If the holes are wallered out you can either drill out to the next larger bolt size or have bushings installed.

I was missing a hub when I bought mine. Posted a want add on craigs list and a guy sold me one for 25 bucks. Had another offer me the whole from assembly with tires for 100. Should have taken him up on that b/c I needed a tire too!! I would try some local options first over ebay if time isn't a huge deal. In the mean time you could leave the ones you have alone and give them a really cheap paint job to make it look halfway decent.
