Farmall H Problems

I have a '51 farmall h. I keep having problems with burning the points up. I can put in a new set, drive a mile, and they will be burnt. I have had the generator rebuilt, new voltage regulator put on, new wires, new coil, a resistor, new condensor, and a good distributor put on. I am running an 8-volt batt. with a 6-volt system, but have a resistor on it.

If anyone Knows what the problem might be, PLEASE LET ME KNOW!
Any help at all will be useful.

THANKS!

Hi Tgrewing,

The points have to be set at a certain gap when open. You have to crank the engine around to make sure this is done properly. Also they want to set nicely together when they are closed. If this seems correct, may be there is something else wrong like the shaft and bushing to the distributor is worn badly. This will cause you problems to no end. Does it have play in it? Hope this helps.

I would suspect high voltge at the points. Check voltage at the coil and see what it is. Maybe resistor is wrong. Bernie Steffen

the distributor is great in terms of wear. the points set nicely together. i was getting 7 volts at the distributor, is that too much?

thanks

Hi Tgrewing,

You may be talking to the wrong person when it comes to tractor electronics. I mostly follow the manual word for word to get me through this type of problem. 7 volts at the distributor? Doesn't it receive a big boost when it goes through the coil? Did you change the condenser at the same time you changed points? I check volts at the plug by letting it spark to ground as I turn the engine over. If it has a bright blue spark it should be OK. Hope this helps.
