Cacl versus windshield washer fluid

HI ALL! WOULD WINDSHIELD WASHER FLUID WORK AS BALLAST IN REAR TIRES OF MY SUPER c? iT IS CHEAP AND DOSEN'T FREEZE. PERCY

Good stuff won't freeze, a lot of it would in most northern states. A lot of the blue stuff you get in discount stores will freeze well above zero.... at least it will when exposed to open air.

Right...my southern-bought washer solvent froze solid on a trip to Chicago once. Most of it is 20F-rated or so...the northern-solvent has a higher concentration of alcohol.

Just for picking nits...the CaCl solution will be considerably heavier if that's what you're looking for...my research suggests the methanol is actually slightly lighter density than water.

Don't know about your area, but out here, RV antifreeze is $3 / gal, WW fluid is $1.50-$1.79 / gal, and the local FS charges 50 cents / gal for CalCl/water mix (5# / gal concentration). Just had the 340 done Monday. I had to pay an extra $50 for the house call, but they did ALL of the work while I was at work. Not a bad deal.

50 cents a gallon for CaCl solution is a ripoff. If you've got a way to pump it into the tire you can make it yourself for the cost of a bag of "salt free" ice melt at Home Depot. One bag will make all the ballast you need, and as I recall, 50lbs for less than $10. $10 only gets you 20 gallons from the tire guy.

If you have a well, the water is essentially free, and on city water, the cost is negligible. I get charged <$20 every two months for water, and they get me for 1000 gallons minimum usage even though I only use a few hundred gallons at most.

I agree, if weight is what you want Calcium is a lot heavier than just straight water and way heavier than WW fluid.

Calcium is a lot heavier and if you should spill some, it is just salt and won't hurt the envoirnment.
