Steering on a 434

I recently bought a 434 and the steering wheel turns nearly a full turn before the wheels start to turn?
I read all the threads here and there was another one doing the same thing but they didnt ever say what they did to fix it?
Does anyone know if there are any servicable parts in the steering box or if a new steering box can still be bought?

They are pretty simple boxes the verticle shaft with the spiral groove (Worm) runs in two ball type bearings at the ends. The sector (The plate with the pin which sticks into the groove) is also simple. The main issues are four. The worm shaft bearings go bad and allow the shaft to go up and down. (read slack in steering) The groove can be wallowed outallowing pin movement in the groove.
The sector following pin (with bearing on some of the types like this) go bad and wobble in the groove.
The steering arm can be loose on the splines.

Jan the link you provided didnt work.
So can I buy a whole box or colum somewhere?
Thanks

Did mine a couple of years ago. As said they are a very simple box. Common problem is that water gets in to the box and rusts out the ball bearings. They are available from any bearing shop, as the rings were fine to use again in my case. Replace the bearings, set up the adjustments and it should be a lot better. I had a new peg made up for mine as the old one was toast. The worm was very worn too, but it works ok now.

Rex did you remove the whole steering column?
4 bolts on the bottom?
I have no manual or anything but it looks like if I unhooked everything behind the dash and took the steering wheel off it would pull straight up after I undid those 4 bottom bolts?
Sound familar or am I off a mile?

Gidday, by memory I had to take a fair bit of gear off.
I had trouble getting the levers off the speed amplifier and throttle shafts so had to take the whole cowelling and all off in one piece in order to get at everything. I seem to remember taking off the fuel tank as well. Then i think there were the four bolts holding on the box.
You may be able to get away with leaving the box on the tractor frame and pulling the guts out of it there, but i prefer to work on the bench.
hope that helps, email me at home if you wish.

Well I got it all apart.
The bearings are gone and so is the top bearing seat? It is broken.
Looks like its been this way for lots of years.
The woem and the pin that drives it look OK.
The pin isnt hardly worn you can still read the numbers on the end of it.
So it looks like I need 2 bearings and a race?
And oil.
