Guys,
I need your help as I an going to look at a SA
in a week or so. Can you tell me whay to look for as far as potential problem areas.
I need to get serial # as guy wasnt sure of year , engine size ect. So with your help I can go pretty well armed . I do know that it was stuck we he got it. The motor was gone over ..
So any insight on thing to look for ?
Thanks in advance,
Harry

On a super A what i look for is how much play does the steering wheel have ,and also check the brake pedals for exesive play. Check the engine for cracks or welds. check the hydrolics how they work are they noisy. If you want to check the clutch get on it and put it in 4th gear and let up the clutch slowly and see if slips. Try the brakes to see if they work. Listen for noise in the tranmission when you drive it.Thats just a few things i check when i look at a super A or 140. I prefer the 140 because they are newer and have less wear and tear on them. Hope that helps.Erik..

Look at the tires and the engine block for any repairs such as any welding. Check the oil for any coolant leakage. Check the serial number should contain 6 digits as the early SA's started with sn 250001. Drive the tractor to see how it handles and if the steering is tight and operate the hydraulics. Hal

Harry: The tractor is 50+ years old, unless your absolutely certain of items rebuilt, problem areas could be most anywhere. Two of the more common problems one sees are governors and steering box. Another Item I'd look for is Rockford clutch. You can see this through inspection hole. The old Auburn clutches were 3 spring, whereas Rockford is 6 spring pressure plate. Most have been changed to rockford, and if you find an Auburn, most likely it needs to be rebuilt.

Listen for transmission noise in each and every gear. Jack the rear wheels to check for any looseness in rear axle bearings. Run the hydraulic levers through complete range, one at a time, make sure rockshafts work in unison with levers, and without unusual noise.

If the vendor has owned tractor for 5 years or more, quietly quiz him on lubrication of fan hub lubrication and distributor drive lubrication. If he isn't aware of how to do that or if in fact both are required every 6 months, you best count on both giving trouble, probably $200.+ if you have to go with new parts.

Super A with original engines 1947 to 1951 block part number should be 251069 R1, after 1951 354898 R1. If original both engines are C-113 with 3" bore. The 251069 R1 could have been changed to 3-1/8" bore and 354898 R1 could have been changed to 3-1/8" or 3-1/4" bore. Look for block breakage or repair behind carb. Carter carbs are poor, Zenith is much better.

Tractor and engine serial numbers will be very close to each other until 1951. After that time a spread develops gradually to 2,000 by 1954. Engine numbers get higher than tractor numbers.

Thanks guys i knew i could count on you to help,
you gave a lot of things to look for.
I really have my heart set on a 100 but in pa they are hard to find especially in my area .
A SA is the closest I can come and I love the look of them. I would like to put a belly mower on it for some light mowing. My neighbor has an SAV and it beautiful. I will look at it and then when it gets nicer out I will drive it .
Thanks a lot ,
Harry
