F 656 D engine oil level guage

Yes, it's just the dipstick. My tractor came with dipstick P/N 368986R91, which is the same one as in my early S/N F 706 D. (same engine, D282). It was damaged, and when I ordered a new one from the dealer, the parts system calls for P/N 670072C91. According to the parts system, I have the correct dipstick in my 706. (I think there was another P/N for cotton pickers, didn't pay attention.) Can anyone shed light on this? On another note, when driving, if I shift from DD to TA, the tractor freewheels. Is it working properly? Thanks.

Stovepipe: Compare the dipstick measure with the 706 stick. Who cares what the number is, long as oil level is right. I ran an old Cockshutt for years using a coat hanger for a dipstick. Twisted a O handle on it then a rubber gromet, took it to my neighbors Cockshutt, filed in proper full and low measure.

Thanks ejr-IA, I'm glad I got the right part now. I guess the dipstick tube must be a different length, can't figure anything else.

The old one was broken off. The new part came, but was different P/N. Someone put the wrong one in, stole it, or something. thanks.

Good, I'm glad it's not broken. My 706 slows when you go from DD to TA, so I thought it might not be right. Thanks

Please elaborate, am I doing something to damage the tractor? I thought you could shift it in and out of TA when you need different speeds.

Just do not let it go faster in TA than it would go in Direct Drive in any gear. The issue is overspeeding the TA case and clutch. it is OK to pull the TA back when under load, no issue. It is OK to pull it back on flat ground in high gear. it is not OK to let the tractor go faster in TA. and for the bigger tractor it is not OK to use it to Slow Down using engine braking even though it will (it tears them up). Thank you for explaining that. So throttle back and slow down before shifting to TA, don't let the 656 speed up when it's freewheeling(like down hill etc). And on the 706 don't use it as an engine brake. Got it!

If you are in a tillage situation, and going gets tough just jerk it back rapidly into TA (either one). Without throttling down!!
When going is easier, release the lock and rapidly (fast) push it into DD. No hesitation at all. Just the free wheeling down hill, or using the bigger one for engine braking is an issue. JimN
