OT, plumbing

I tried this on the tool forum, but made it too complicated, so I'm trying here. As a rule of thumb lets say you have 2 holes 24 inches apart OC, and you need a piece of 1/2 inch pipe to connect thru said holes, there is a tee on one end and an elbow on the other end. How long should the pipe be, taking into account the amount the pipe threads into the fittings and the fittings themselves? And one more thing, if I HAD TO use a small amount of galvanized pipe in a naturnal gas line could I do so, I hate to do a 70 mile round trip for 2 feet of black iron pipe.
Thanks

I would think 26 inches with threads would be enough. Why don't you call your local plumbing supply and have them send the black pipe and fittings.

Something about propane plumbing requires either black iron pipe or copper lines with flared ends/ fittings. Must be something about the lead ---galvanizing or solder.

the pipe would be 23 inches long. 1/2 inch fittings take off 1/2 inch for each fitting. galv. pipe is the same as black iron they just put the galv coating on it.

They allow galv. pipe for gas in some regions.

It was thought that the galv. would flake off and plug orifices.

It was also not used so no one would use an old gas pipe for water.

Some places require it for outside gas line use.

If it were mine I would use it and have.

IA Gary is on it. A small portion is now allowed in some areas. If you want the pipe T and El to be tight against the wall when tightened, it is best to put it together out side the wall and measure it (even with different fittings. Tightness and threading dies/taps have variations and allow differing depth of engagement. (as noted below) about 1/2" per joint is an average on Nominal 1/2" pipe. JimN

I had a single galvanized elbow in my black pipe gas line for my furnace. Inspector made me replace it. Had to be inspected because the gas company would not hook up the gas otherwise. I don't think one galv elbow will do much harm.

Thanks guys, and if my memory is still working the 3/4 pipe will follow the same rule?, and so on up the line of pipe sizes? We have no inspectors where I live, only the septic tank Police and I don't mess with them. They told me that I was NOT ALLOWED to dig up my riser and check if I was taking on water because I am not a licensed plumber, I guess it takes years of training to dig properly. Thanks again.
