Tractor Vet- Question on 1256 shifter rebuild

I am working on the shift linkages on my 1256. I have a little slop in the Hi-Lo shaft going into range cover. Can that cover be removed simply by removing all of the bolts on top of the cover? Am I asking for trouble by pulling that off of there? I'm assuming there are shift forks and such that will have to go back just right.

Well it is not quiet as easy as it seams . When i pull a range transmission cover i also pull the side cover on the left side of the rear end behind the left step , the one with the clipped corner You can either drain the speed transmission to drop the oil level or just pull the cover and loose about a gallon if the oil level is not over full. The reason for pulling this cover is so ya can remove the rev. shift fork as when ya pull the cover you pull the rev. shift rod along with the top cover . Also if your tractor has been upgraded with a spring loaded park lock you must first block up the lever for the park lock i use a 1/2 nut for this to hold it in the unlock position then using a stiff bladed putty knife i drive it in between the cover and the rearend housing to break the gasket.then either with the help of and extra pair of hands or two pry bars try to come straight up then lift it up and off . Ya may find a broken or missing roller when ya get it off and maybe a broken or missing spring . Need more help ya know where to find me.

Okay, thanks vet. I'm not sure if I'll get back to it tomorrow or not, but Monday for sure. My first inclination is to just leave it alone. That would be the cowardly way out. I just know though if I don't go ahead and do this I'll regret it. Also, when replacing the bushings on the vertical shafts that run from the gearshift down to the transmission how do you get those shafts out to replace those bushings? It looks like you have to pull the whole steering column and base to get those things out. Is this right? I really don't want to do that! I really appreciate your help. I do have a full set of Blue Ribbon manuals but sometimes advice from someone like yourself who has done it a million times is much more helpful. Thanks vet!

No you do not have to pull the steering support ya just have to drive out one pin on the speed shifter rod and unbolt the range shifter lever and remove from the top .Or ya can cheat and use a long drift punch and swedge the metal around the shifter bushing to snug it up a bit i have done this a time or two and i swedge it in four places .
