Which fast hitch type was best?

Does a 450 Farmall have down pressure on the fasthitch. Which fast hitch was better the one on the 400 or 450. Will Farmall 300 fast hitch parts fit on a 400? Thanks

Yes, a pin in the cylinder linkage under the cylinder allows float or down pressure

The 450 had a marginally operational draft control (not ideal) the 400 had a cylinder controlled angle of attack control that was difficult to make work (learn to finesse) as draft adjustment, but worked well to get equipment well off of the ground. The above means it is a toss up and not equal but different. The added cylinder on the 400 uses a valve to control the cylinder that leaves only one of possible three open for remotes.

Very few components will interchange (memory) due to different structures/castings/sizes. Check part numbers on caseih.com for possible interchange. JimN

i plowed a lot of ground with a 300 and 311 plow. i have since used fast hitch plows on the 560 and 350 utility. i much prefer the 300/400 style of depth control, as you can get a lot faster rise or drop at the ends of the field, as well as controlling the depth through the field.

Which fast hitch is better kind of depends what the majority of work you plan on doing with it.If plowing or cultivating, I would take the traction control fast hitch of the 450.Like Jim said, it`s easier to set and control the depth, though I don`t really consider it a draft contolled hitch. For pretty much everything else I like the older style FH on the 400.It`s a sturdier hitch than the traction control FH. There`s alot of 350`s,450`s ,460`s and 560`s out there that have alot of side to side movement in them even in the rigid position. Seems that they didn`t take too long to get that way ,either.
The parts interchangeabilitywill be almost nil betwwen 300 and 400.

goatboy: The 300 and 400 had hydraulic depth control, operated manually at the touch of a hydraulic lever. You could change plow depth on the go very accurately.

The later tractors had an automatic draft control that worked poor at best.

"The parts interchangeability will be almost nil betwwen 300 and 400."

I don't believe that is a true statement. Only those individual parts that bolt to the tractor frame are different.

At any rate, I don't take any info from posters on this website as representing an infalable statement. Some guy are more accurate than others. It is kinda like reading the glossy coffee-table books on tractors. Most of them are loaded with errors.

If you need to find interchangeability info, go to the source. That would be IH's parts books. They are published on the net. Better yet, get the books. I find them easier to use. I own books for tractors I do not own so I can check interchanges. Some salvage yards are totally clueless.

Wardner, I`ll admit that my statement about parts interchangeability being almost nil should have read "parts interchangeability of the major components of the fast hitch will almost be nil between the 300 and 400.There are some common parts, but the major components ARE different (rockshaft, bellcrank, yoke w/sockets.
