we have an old MD on the place i work at, and my coworker was moving a small load up a hill in 3rd gear and next thing he knows it's free wheeling backwards. now we have no pto,1,2,3,4 but 5th still works???? any ideas we've got a complete rear coming for a couple hundred, and wounding if it's worth saving this rear from the junk yard? thanx.

Sounds like either the countershaft driven gear or its Woodruff key have stripped out.
Reason: Tranny gears 1, 2, 3, 4, and the PTO are all driven thru the countershaft. If the countershaft is not turning all these gears will be lost.
5th gear however is "direct" - it bypasses the countershaft gearing - and thus will still work.

If it were mine I'd probably junk (or part out...) the failed rear end. I would however first pull off the tranny cover to learn exactly what broke(!)
