pulling front engine cover

Need advice on pulling the front engine cover off an M. Have removed all the bolts, do I take off the pully at the bottom? Then what? Is it bolted to the crank or something else inside the engine?

This is why you need a manual. Hal

That was an answer. He needs to by the manuals so that he knows what is going on. Even a parts manual will show you enough to assist. The pulley is a press fit so you are going to need a good puller. You may need to remove the front bolster to get enough room to get the puller on there.

I recently had the front cover off a couple different M's and a 400. Here's the deal:

1 - The fixed bolster assembly must be unbolted from the frame rails then slid forward several inches - or removed entirely - to provide room to remove the crankshaft pulley. On mine I drained the cooling system, removed the radiator hoses, disconnected the steering shaft at the U-joint then used a hoist to remove the entire front end and radiator assembly as a unit.

2 - The crank pulley is retained by large (2-1/2") nut on the crankshaft nose. A socket is required to remove the nut - it's in a recess and cannot be grabbed by a pipe wrench, etc.

3 - One the big nut is removed the pulley usually slides right off - no puller is required.

In my opinion, no, "Get a manual" is not an answer.

It's good advice, but it's not an answer. To me, that reply says one of two things:

Either the poster doesn't know the answer, or does not want to take the time to explain the procedure.

I often ask questions because I don't happen to have a manual yet, or the one I have doesn't go into sufficient detail, or I'm hoping someone who has been there and done that can give me a quick off-the-cuff explanation.

The whole purpose of this forum is to be helpful and share knowledge. "Get a manual" does neither.

Of course, that's just me, and I could be wrong.

Pulley has to come off after nut is removed as already posted, sometimes they come off easy and sometimes a good puller with a lot of pressure is needed. Make sure all but the lower inside bolt is removed from ignition drive housing, if steel plate behind front cover is going to need off you may as well remove ignition and drive completly. 2 bolts below drive need removed, also bottom bolt from governor housing. These have bolt heads to rear of tractor. Oil pan needs removed or at least loosened or bolts removed from front that go into front cover. If your going in to remove camshaft you may as well drop pan because the oil pump comes out before camshaft will. If you have all other bolts out of cover with heads to front of tractor, dowel pins and gasket seal is all thats left holding cover on.

Get a manual and get parts books and service books is always the best advice we can give you as we can sometimes forget vitals or assume that you should know what to some of us is already common knowledge from a lifetime of work. Also there is the chance that we could be wrong or misreading your question. AS always having the books is a good investment and we are still here to help you if you still have questions. Armand

Thanks everyone, all the replies are relevent and helpful. And yes, I do need to buy a manual, which I am in the process of doing.
