SLipping TA on SMTA

OK, back to this TA that is slipping on the low side.. Looking at the TA from the top, with the inspection plate removed I see that the plate is off the friction disc only about .050 with the lever back. Is this enough? It does disconnect the friction disc but should it travel further backward to fully engage the low side?
On adjusting I am at the very end (short as possible)of the threads with the clevis on the rod to the TA shaft.

Yes thats enough, all the clutch has to do is release or slip to go in low range. In low range the clutch has nothing to do with the T/A slipping. In fact the T/A clutch parts could be removed from tractor and it would still pull in low speed if T/A unit is good. Your T/A unit needs repair. Could be a outside chance there"s heavy gear oil in transmission instead of hytran or similar oil, which could keep unit from working good in the cold climate. Other than that slim chance its tear down time.
Also if you can shift in and out of transmission gears with no hang up problem thats a good sign that T/A clutch is releasing okay.

.050 is more than enough clearance to release the direct drive clutch. There is no adjustment to the low side. It is a one way clutch (ramp and roller assembly) that engages when the TA clutch is released and over rides when the the TA clutch is engaged. If it slips in low side it is ALWAYS the one way clutch that is the problem.

Go back and adjust the clutch linkages as they should be and don't worry about the way it looks inside.

When properly adjusted you should have about an inch of free travel on the clutch pedal at the platform. The TA handle should have a couple of inches free travel. The connector link should be adjusted so that as soon as either the TA lever or the clutch pedal is moved, the other control should start to move. When facing uphill the transmission should shift freely with the TA lever forward.

I can shift the tranny fine. Fluid is brand new hytran. I just hate to do a double split, when I see a disc that looks like new in there.

The "new" looking disk has NOTHING to do with low-end slippage, only high-end slippage. The sprag (one-way clutch) it the mechanical link when in TA, the clutch "disk" is disengaged.

I have done the double split to change the main clutch, TA clutch, and make repairs to the TA sprag. I did not go through the TA completely the first time and will have to re-visit in the future. DO IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME!

I had issues recently with the gear shift lever hanging up uphill and flat ground when stopped, clutch down. I had two problems, the TA linkage was misadjusted and the main clutch linkage was not allowing full disengagement.

Good luck,

Charles

face the music the one way clutch is bad the only way to fix is double split the tractor and remove TA assy. from housing and install new clutch ramp and rollers. good luck Scott

i split my 450 diesel to find one of the fingers on the t a clutch had fallen to the bottom of the ta case along with the pin it pivots on i thought there is my problem... i put the damn thing back together and still no ta i got to split it again to fix the sprag -ramp and rollers.i learned my lesson when torn down that far take it all apart and renew it. at least your mta is an easier split than a 450d

The issue is as stated not the clutch. The clutch is the direct drive component (working) releasing the clutch causes the planetary gearbox to try to reverse rotate in the tractor chassis. This rotation is stopped by a "one way" device at the opposite end of the TA. It acts like a ratchet allowing turning forward (direct) but holding when the TA drum tries to spin backward. It will not get better, and it can be fixed reasonably inexpensively. I recommend Kevin's parts, ask him. JimN
