IH 886 steering box (in cab, not by wheels)

We"ve got an international 886. It has power steering and today, I noticed some oil dripping from the steering box connected to the steering WHEEL. This is up in the engine compartment.

The steering box, seems to be a round, 3-part cylinder with 8 or so, bolts on the bottom, holding all three parts together.

I don"t yet have a socket thin enough to see if its loose bolts BUT...here"s my issue:

Looks like when the tractor is running and pressure is up, hydraulic fluid is just weeping from the two seams where the 3 parts are compressed together.

This could EASILY be some loose bolts on the bottom but.... I"m wondering... what if it isn"t?

What might cause oil to leak from BOTH seams on this?

Are these rebuildable (worst case scenario) or can I get gaskets and replace them (better case scenario)

Looking like I need a thinwall socket for this?

The bolt heads look to be flush with the bottom of the "cup". Meaning, the bolt heads are actually recessed a bit so I can NOT get to them very easily.

Thanks for any thoughts

I don't know if this will work but I found this on their website:

https://webparts.pvassociates.net/cnh/webparts/main.php

This is I think the blow up of the whole assembly and oil is seeping out of the seams between parts 26, 24 and 31 (part 23 I think either goes inside the others or doesn't exist on my tractor)

part (bolt) 27 is the part that's recessed and I can't get a socket on yet. (only had impact sockets which are thicker)

I had the same problem on a 986. I'd imagine they're similar. Ended up ordering a rubber seal from the dealer. looks like a 2-3" long piece of thick rubber hose. there are 3 different steering pumps with 2 different seals. so got to get the right one. got to keep everything real clean and get lots of little pieces back together right. the service manual helps a lot.

Is this something that (presuming this seal is all that's needed) could be done while on the machine or would I need to remove this assembly? (which means steering wheel, hydraulic lines....)

?

The easiest is to remove the steering hand pump from the tractor before disassembling it. It can be done while installed on the tractor but if you have never done one before you will be better off removing it first. Also that way you can make sure it is clean before you start to replace the seal.

Remove the steering hand pump. Mount the pump assembly in a vise with the shaft down. Mark the pump housing, sleeve, and end cap so that you will be able to reassemble them in the same position. Remove the retaining bolts. Carefully remove the end cover. Hold the pump together as you remove the metal sleeve and sealing ring. Install the new seal and the sleeve. Reinstall the end plate. Reinstall on the tractor.

By all means remove the hand pump and mount in vise with bolts facing up.Measure the metal ring for width and the new seal should be about an 1/8 of an inch longer than the metal ring. When removing end cap watch for small washer between end cap and rotor, remove outer ring and seal while retaining rotating group in pump. Lube new seal with oil and install end cap, tighten evenly until you achive about 15 ftlbs rotate input shaft and torque to a final 19 ftlbs.

For you guys who call this the 'hand pump'... Might I hope you were able to navigate to the website and see the blow up diagram of the part? Or is this from memory?

In part, the reason I'm asking is I tried to copy/paste the url into browser and it didn't work (dang it). I'm just hoping that someone figured out to go to the case/ih website and was able to look at a picture.

I'm intrigued that this is called a hand pump.

Thanks for your help.

another question if I may...

If indeed, it only needs a new gasket, is that something that would cost say, under $15... here's the REAL question I'm trying to get to....

if it's cheap enough, would it make more sense to buy BOTH of them so I have the right one from the start. I don't want to take something apart and then wait 3 weeks for a part to arrive and not remember how I did it. I'd rather take it apart, fix it, put back together.

Question part II: Is the steering shaft actually connected to this or might I hope the steering shaft unbolts and won't be something I'm having to wrestle with once the hand pump is removed?

If you order the part for your specific tractor, model and serial number, you should not have any problem getting the correct part.

Remove the hydraulic steering lines from the hand pump. Remove the bolts that hold the pump mounting bracket to the firewall. The pump should slide out along with the mounting bracket.

I would guess that it is called the hand pump since if you lose hydraulic pressure it still functions as a pump to maintain steering.
