Donald-- Where on the manifold was the crack? Also, are M manifolds prone to crack in any particular area? Thanks

Many manifolds are prone to cracks and self destruct. Even modern auto engines have issues with the manifolds. Extreme heat (near 1200 degrees) and then cooling to ambient summer temps, or below freezing in winter then repeating that thousands of times.
External cracks and holes (rustout) is most common.
Internal between the intake plenum, and exhaust heat transfer section (especially dual fuel manifolds) is next, and difficult to find.
Yours probably does not have an internal crack, if it was loose. Checking well requires taking it off, and plugging the exhaust pipe hole and filling it with water while on its back and the ports are up. This will show leaks internal to the intake. Some exhaust manifolds have intentional holes designed to let water out befor it does damage. These are less than 1/8th" or so and can be plugged to check for cracks, then unplugged for operation.
