A whatsit question

IH 330 U -

What's the large fill hole just to the front of the distributor? That looks like a hydraulic pump but I thought the fill was under the seat.

You say front of distributor. Is it about 2.5" diameter with a wing nut type cover. If that is what your describing, it's fill hole for oil in the crankcase.

Hi Hugh, I don"t remember a fill hole in front of the Distributer. Crankcase oil is added through the dipstick tube. We traded our 330 off in 1981 so I have forgotten a lot since then. Heck at all most 67 I have trouble remembering my name some days.

Jimmy: The problem for me on this one, having never had a 330, I wasn't sure if it was same as 350, or being the smalll block and same as 230. Problem is, I can't think of any large port forward of distributor until one goes 40 series. The 40 series have a the crankcase fill port on right side top of governor. 140, 240 and 340 all have that. Looks like oil fill caps from that era.

Could be it's been changed or IH started using that oil fill on the last of the 30 series. My 130 is one of the last and does not have it.

Jim: Right as in which way, same as 350 or same as 140, 240 and 340. I suspect the latter, just like to be sure.

Jim: As I see it, 330 has to be same as 140, 240 and 340, crankcase fill is on top of governor. I looked at a few photos in gallery this morning, not many 330 photos at proper angle to see oil fill cap.

The reason I questioned your answer is all 300 and 350 have fill cap in same place, however it's not on top of governor, but rather just an enlarged timing gear cover to accomodate fill cap. Those use a large cast wing nut type cover, about 2.5" maybe 3" diameter.

Governor on 300 and 350 are same as IH used for years on H, M, SH, SM, 300, 400, etc., and is on left side of the engine.

Lookit all the trouble I caused. :D

The motor is a c-135, (mine) Not all of my tin is on right now so when I changed my oil I stuck a funnel in the oil breather figuring that's where it goes. I can see now if my tin were in place filling up on oil would be a hassle if the only opening was in the valve cover.
