Gas vs. Diesel

I'm looking for a "new" tractor. I use it to brush-hog, plow snow, etc. I may do some hay with it as well, but I'm not a hard core farmer. What is everyone's opinion on gas vs. diesel? I know diesel is more fuel efficient, but in central Michigan diesel is about $1 per gallon more than gas so even though it's more efficient I assume it would be more expensive to operate. Other considerations?

Thanks.

Jason

If you aren't going to do "hard core" farming and want to use it in the winter, a gas would probably be the way to go. The gas tractor is going to be cheaper to purchase than a comparable diesel and like you said, the price of diesel is about a $1/gallon higher. The gas will usually start easier than a diesel in cold weather.

Old tractors generally require some "tinkering" for repairs to keep them running. Gas tractors are more simple, thus more easy to repair. Pre 1960 gas tractors were usually designed so the farmer could do most repair and maintenance.

Gas no questions asked. Easier to start in the winter and as long as you can be basic repairs there are by far easier to work on and cost less to keep running. Ya they burn more fuel but if you don't work a diesel hard and long it will give you problems that you will not like or want
