IH 300 Utility - Reasons to Buy or Not to Buy

I just finished my Ford '41 9N project and found a IH 300 Utility at a reasonable price and fair condition for my second. Since I am new to the IH/Farmall family and this model, what are your thoughts about this model? Are parts easily available, is the tractor easy to work on and perhaps anyone with a 300 U can give me some advice what I am getting into or that I should pass on this. Thanks. Tom

hey tom is this the one that is in grand gorge at the army surplus store ?? I f so i have wondered about it for a year or so .. let me know

CaseIH still has most parts, most others are available from the aftermarket, others from salvage. Only major problem is if the steering box is worn, parts are hard to come by. If it does not have power steering, it will steer rather hard. If it has a defective TA (torque amplifier), those are relatively expensive to fix. It is more complex that the 2N/9N/8N Fords. I do not own a 300, but do have several IH tractors, including a 460 Hi Utility. The 460U replaced the 300U/350U. It's much simpler than the 460U.

If you found one at a reasonable price, you should take it. The Utility models are a little hard to find. I've never owned a 300U, but my Dad has a 300 rowcrop and they have good engines are are very easy to work on. Many engine parts are still availble. The 300 rowcrop and Utility use the same engine.

While I love IH tractors, I've got to tell you, on those 300/350 utilities, make sure the steering is power and in good condition before you buy it. Two reasons: If it is manual steering, you will need arms like "Bluto" to drive it; 2) All the steering parts are made of "unobtainium". mike

I have a 300U. I think it is a great tractor. It works great mowing, usuing all kind of implements. However, if you put a loader on it, you need power steering.

I owned a 57 300u for about 2 years. It had a loader, no powersteering and it just about killed me. It was terrible to steer. The steering box was worn out and I considered a Jacksons Powersteering kit but found a great deal on a IH 354 with loader and snow blade. I hauled the 354 home, unloaded it off the trailer and turned it in my driveway using 1 finger on the steering wheel. Powersteering is a wonderful thing. The 300u worked really good, started no problem in the winter. I used it alot over the 2 years but I would have used it more if the steering was not so bad.
Just my 2 cents for what it is worth.
