H lighting switch update

littlered

Polarized the generator on my H. I now have lights and the amp shows discharge when they are on. After letting it run for a half hour with the lights on I turned them off but the guage did not show that it was charging.
Is this normal or do I still have a problem with my electrical system?

You should show a discharge with the lights on and the motor off. With the motor running and the generator polarized as you have done, you should be showing a charge of some sort, however slight, with the lights on. And it should certainly show charging with the lights off.

Supects at this point are your generator, the relay or regulator and the battery. And those only if all your connections are bright and shiny, including the battery ground.

There's still a problem. Most likely the generator is not working. However could also be the generator IS working but the ammeter is wired up wrong and is not reading correctly. (With the engine running at speed, if the system is charging the ammeter should swing far to the right of center with the lights off, and a little to right with the lights on).

Do you have an accurate DC voltmeter? If so take a reading across the battery posts with the engine running at speed. If the system is charging you will see 7.0 to 7.5 volts across at the battery. Less than 6.6 volts means the battery is being drained.
