Farmall A and Super A Front Rims

Hello Everyone,
It"s been a long time since I posted last, hope you all are doing well ! I"ve got some front tire issues that I have to get solved before the snow starts to fall. I have two tractors a A and a Super A. My front tire of the Super A (1952 I think) is rotted and needs replaced. In the interum, I took the front well off the A (1949 I believe). The Rim from the A seems to be slightly bigger, it does not seem to fit snug on the case wheel hub, and makes a clucking when you drive it. I wasn"t happy with this, so I took the tire off the A"s Rim and started to put it on the Super A"s rim, however, it didn"t fit ! I was larger it seemed.

Can anyone shed some light on this ? What size tire should I be looking for on the Super A? is there any way I can measure it ? The tire is so rotted that I can"t read anything off it. I should mention that the tires are the 3 "rib" (??). The rim is also the type that is smooth on the inside and relies on the clamps to hold them in place.

Thanks in advance everyone !

i cant reply as to the rims but i'm running 5.00x 15 on my 40 A my 52 Super A my 57 230 and my 63 140

Brian: You have two different type rims, adjustable and non adjustable, they will not interchange on the hubs. All those tractors had 5.00 or 5.50 x 15 on a 3" wide rim.

The non adjustable rim is held on by lugs similar to older heavy trucks. The adjustable rim has lugs welded to the rim.

There is one other option, that being 4" x 16" rims, only available as adjustable. They take 5.00 or 5.50 x 16 tires.

Brian: Adjustable rims can be installed inside or outside the hub with lugs turned in or out. Gives 4 settings on each wheel. All adjustable wheels have lugs welded or rivited to the rim. Non adjustable don't have the lugs welded or rivited to the rim.

You look at your A and SA hubs, I'm betting they are different. You can't put a non adjustable rim on a hub designed for adjustable rims, or vice versa.

The clamp type rims are 3x15 and will take a 4.00x15 or a 5.00z15 tire you could even mount a 5.50x15. The standard tire for the A was 4.00x15 on the 3x15 rim and that rim will fit the A,SA,B,BN,C amd SC with the clamps. The hub for the rims with the three loops is different than the hub that uses the clamps. Yours should interchange as i havent had any problems interchanging them

gene: The 16" wheel uses the same bolt pattern and hub as 15" with lugs welded or rivited to the rims.

I doubt if you see those until 100 and 130 parts book. I've never seen them on a SA. I have seen the ocasonal SC with 16" rims. My 130 came new with 11.2x24 rear and 5.50x16 front. My brother has a 230 with 11.2x36 rear and 5.50x16 front. Both these tractors were sold new by same dealer. In fact the day my dad bought the 130 there were 4 each of 130 and 230, and I'm quite certain they all had 16" front tires. I suspect most of these tractors I've seen with 16" wheels came from that same dealer.

My 130 manual shows 4.00 and 5.00 x 15", 5.50 and 6.00 x 16" and 4.00x19" as tire and rim selections for that tractor. My brother's 230 show the same 15" and 16" tire and rim selection.

One can't by 16" replacement rims for these anymore. When I replaced the original rims on my 130, initially I had to go with a used set of 15". I didn't like the 15" plowing snow, they hang up bad in snow. Since you were here I bought 4.5x16 blank rims, spot welded in a 1/2" x 1-1/2" band then welded lugs to the band. I'm now running 6.00x16 front and 12.4x24 rear. Front wheels roll better in snow.

The 140 having a disc wheel, one can still buy 4x16 rim.

My 100 has 4.00x 19's on it. This rim is very common on SA's to 130's in this area. Must be how the local dealer ordered them.
