H Just Stopped Charging...

Had no problem what-so-ever uo until 3 days ago. Then, nuthin'! Ka-put!! No charge! Before I tear into the electrical system again, I'd like a little input. Here's the background: I rewired the H about 4 years ago. Changed out the old wiring for a brand new harness setup. Took the generator apart & gave it a good cleaning. Voltage regulator looked new so I left well enough alone. Fresh wires for the lights. A new push button for the starter. A double-ought-gage "pipeline" going to the push button from the batt & one going out to the starter. A new starter was put on last year. Fresh battery, too. I think I've plumb run out of things to replace. The only thing that didn't get replaced were the lightbulbs & the lights/gen. switch. Might that switch be my gremlin? Where else should I look? Thanks - Mike

generator regulator set up with low high positions on light switch? if so simple test of generator, ground field lead (small wire) at generator should show full charge, 10 or 15 amps, if not take to generator rebuild shop after checking all conections. also possible bad amp meter, test for voltage output with meter, my memory is not what it was but i beleive 6.8 to 7.2 volts is correct. hard for me to describe what i would check as i just start eliminating possibility's by various methods with what i have available when problems occur

The problem with electrical systems when compared to mechanical, is that you can"t just go by looks. You need to test it and work off the numbers, not just looks. I"ve seen several voltage regulators that were bad right out of the box, so I"d recommend going through John T"s checklist and test every part of the system. My bet is that the regulator probably just went out. I find that on average, we replace one every 2 to 4 years due to the moisture and constant vibration they see. I"d go through the checklist anyway though, or you might fry the replacement.
