238 Utility Tractor.

A friend of mine has an International 238 utility tractor/ Industrial with a loader. It is Diesel. I was wondering if any of you folks out there would know which ag tractor is close enough to this to get some electrical parts for it. It was built in the late 70's as I remember. I did some transmission work on it for him a number of years ago and the trans parts were like a B414 but I belive the electrical end of things is newer. The problem that I run into getting parts for this tractor is that the IH Industrial line of tractors was sold to Dresser and then that sold to Komatsu. Of course along the line parts and sevice for this wheel tractor was buried and lost forever. The Guys at my Case IH dealer laugh and say you have a what? The guys at Komatsu don't even admit one of these was even built. The parts that I am seeking are related glow plug operation. This tractor only has about 500 hours on it and is in very good condition. The transmission problem I repaired years ago, was due to a factory defect. Thanks, Dave!

Hi Dave, not familiar with IH 238 but am familiar with B414D. If it is like a B414D then it will have a British made BD154 ci engine with glow plug start. Now if it was assembled in USA it would have Delco Remy electrics instead of the dreaded Lucas electric that was on the British assembled ones. The BD154 engine was used in several industrial and ag models up to mid 1980s. B414,434,444,384,424,3414,3444,2444,7000 Forklift just some of the models.

If it is a BD154, BD154 will be stamped on the right side of the engine below the lift pump and hydraulic pump.

Part number for glow plug for BD154:
377206R92 GLOW PLUG

Thanks for the reply, Actually what I need is the glow plug indicator that is in the plastic dash. It glows to indicate that the glow plugs are getting warm. Not sure what else is under the dash yet that may control the glow plugs, but some mice had a field day. What a mess! Dandy Dave!

Becareful when you connected up the replacement glow plug indicator switch that glow plugs are connected in series and there isn't one shorted to the inside of the precombustion chamber or the first time you use the glow plugs the indicator will turn red very quickly and burn out again. The wiring starts with a black wire from the glow plug indicator to the first glow plug by the battery box, then there is an white insulator with a copper wire underneath going to the next glow plug underneath a white insulator then another copper wire on top going to next glow plug. The over/under pattern is repeated and the glow plug up front has a wire going to engine frame as the ground.

BTW the glow plugs are usually activated by the start switch by pushing and holding the key in between the on and the start position. The older B414 had a separate L handled switch on the dash for activating the glow plugs.

Thanks for the info, The one I have did not burn out, but the bottom screws, wires, and connectors are all corroded from the mice. also the top end rusted off and just fell apart when I attempted to remove it. Them little devils can sure cause a lot of dammage. Dandy Dave!

Looking though the Case IH on line parts pages it looks like the 384 is the same thing in an ag version. The dash and indicator look the same. Thanks fellows. Dandy Dave!

Hey Jim. How do you know if the plug is touching inside the chamber? and if it is, how do you correct the problem? thanks, Don
