Hey, i have a 49' Farmall M and its leaking from the stearing gear at the top of the bolster. Its running down to my front axle. I was wondering is this just a seal tht needs to be repared and would it be easy to do?

The seal is a easy fix just takes some time to take everything apart to get to it. Grease also works intead of oil.

Not a hard fix. More time consuming that anything. The seal is easily obtainible from your local CIH dealer. Just jack it up, drop the axle stem, replace the seal, replace the axle stem, fill with oil and replae the cap. Pretty easy.

Have seen 1000+ hours per year Ms run for years with grease in steering gear with no problems. If seal is really bad grease will ooze out too though.

The "axle stem" ELD refers to is the "bolster pivot shaft" in the parts catalog. Matters not whether you've got a wide or narrow front - the bolster pivot shaft is the same for both.

Replacing the pivot shaft seal is not difficult. But a couple large and heavy parts must be removed to get at it. Also unless the seal surface on the pivot shaft is in good shape, oil will leak out of a new seal same as it did with the old one.

Consequently the quickest/cheapest fix is to simply pack the steering gearbox full with good quality wheel bearing or corn head grease. The grease will not run out thru a worn pivot shaft seal. And it will lube the worm and sector gear as well as gear oil.
