3 questions about my IH

I recently purchased a IH 354 and hope someone can help me out.
1. Between the seat and the steering colum is "control valve cylinder head" with two knobs on it. What is it and how does it work??
2. The 3 pt hitch control has a "Draft Control lever". What is it and how does it affect the 3 pt hitch???
3. Why is the exhaust pipe under the tractor and not up threw the hood?? Just dosn't look like a real tractor that way.

thanks for any info you can give he.

The second two questions:
Draft control uses the implements weight and tendency to dig itself deeper to ad weight to the rear wheels by weight transfer. Good systems work well (yours is good I believe)
The second is that when used in fence rows and near obstructions (as well as in low door sheds) the upright muffler snags things and makes branches wipe the operator off the tractor. Low exhaust is fine except in tall dry grass, or some hay conditions. JimN

I can help. I have an IH 364. The knobs are as follows. one of the allows the 3pt hitch to raise fast or slow. the other one allows you to shut off the 3pt hitch to use other implements.

Hi AJ, the 354 is the grandson of the British made B414 and for the draft control lever keep it fully forward unless you are using a plow or cultivator or other in ground implement. To use the draft control with a plow, start the plow in the ground and drive forward slowly, push the raise/lower all the way forward and adjust the draft control lever to set the proper plowing depth, now go at normal pulling speed and you may have to fine tune the draft control lever as soil condition change. Only use the raise/lower lever to lift and lower the plow at the end of the field.

Good Luck

Biggest problem with under-slung mufflers is that on a foggy day with no air movement and no tractor movement(digging with a gas engine backhoe) I got a very bad sick headach from exhaust fumes. The next day I built an out-side the frame stack and never got sick from that problem again. I will take my chances with the tree brances!!! Armand

AJ: All those British designed tractors, when new could be ordered from factory with vertical exhaust or horizontal exhaust. Personally, like you, I like the vertical exhaust, however you try and sell that idea to someone running an orchard.
