I am restoring a 1941 Farmall "A"; First, the magnito impulse coupler trips about 8 degreas "before" TDC? and before # 1 is in position, Could the impulse timming gear jump a tooth maybe?
Also it has a "distillant" (kerosine)type carb but has always run on plain gas. Could somebody else have changed this carb or is this a standard fix replacement?

You will need to remove the gov housing then using a mirror check to see if the dots line up when #1 trips as you mite be off one tooth. After all these yrs it will be hard to see the dots probably will need something like a toothbrush to clean the area.

8 degrees isn't far off for doing the adjustment. Unless the magneto is rotated all the way against the engine block, you should be able to just set the timing. If not, the governor gear will need to be remeshed as Gene said. It isn't likely it "jumped a tooth". If it is off, the last person that worked on it assembled it wrong.

On the carb, somebody probably just replaced the original with what he had on hand.

Its been running like that so I doubt if its a tooth out. I suggest that you simply go through a retiming sequence. If its mechanically "out" I think? it is possible that the pawls may be tripping early in your mag. Just maybe worth a try. With it tripping that early you just might feel like disconnecting the plugs if you are going to turn it over by hand. Good luck MTF
