345 V8 in 560

This will be an interesting topic... I want to put a 5.9 Cummins and Automatic Xmission in a 1979 C20 Chevrolet.

Widened frame rails, engine mounts, fan and cooling issues, a flywheel to connect power that allows the starter to work, a engine adapter plate, a governor system to make it operational, and a good reason to do it. Probably 4000 if you do the work, and 10000 if others do it, but it would be a show tractor, not a user (opinion) JimN

Charles: Length of engine will be the limiting factor. I looked a doing much the same with a 404 cu in Deere.

We have a guy here in Canada, installed a 454, 4 barrel in his ride on lawn mower, so I guess anything is possible.

Hugh, I had looked at some Deere engines too. Their shear weight was insane, actually heavier than a Cummins. My other vision is to find a wrecked late-model Chevy/GMC, cheap/salvage. Take the ECM, wiring harness, 6.0 or 8.1 gas and electronic transmisson then massage into a restored 1979 C20.

As for the 345 in the 560 it can't be that hard if you could mate the flywheel and get a machine shop to make a motor plate. Funk made conversion kits to put L6's and V8's in 8N's. These i believe they could be bought new like this. Not many survived though, 100HP thru a drive rated for about 30HP tends to stress key parts.

Good luck there Quicksilver

If you have to ask you may not be mechanically inclined enough to do this project. Whenever I get an "interesting" idea, the first move is to look at all aspects, how to connect (frame rails are easier than engine to trans), WHY wasn't this done before? what has to change and what can I use. Then again, if you throw enough $$$ anything can be made to work.

Quicksilver, if you have the 345 cid engine and an available 560 to play with, I'd do it. I have played with the idea of pulling my D188 (nothing wrong with it) and putting in a D282 with a M&W turbo! It can be done, but at what expense to the driveline? The D282 would be a bolt-on for the F504's D188. As long as you did not lug the 345 down on a regular basis, it should hold up, for a while. Just gotta keep from dumping the clutch and making smokey chevrons on the tarmac.

If you can find a scrapped 815 or 915 combine with a gas engine you should be able to use that governor assembly and carb.
