A few 2+2 questions.

My apologies, these tractors may not be antique, but, I had just read the post about the 7588. Were all the 2+2's made by Steiger? I had assumed they rolled off the assembly line with the 86's & the two wheeled 88's. I only figure this because everything behind the pivot looks like an 86 or 88 series tractor. I am also wondering if AFS will work with the hydraulic steering setup of the 2+2 & I wonder if an auto guidance system will account for all that hood!? Also, is there a remedy for the problem of the front duals hitting the cab steps or cab corners, outside of removing them? Some kind of frame snubber or cylinder stop, maybe? These are just a few ideas I'm batting around. I'm hoping to buy one in the next few years. I had quite a few rides in a fairly new one when I was a kid (I came into this world roughly 4 mo's. after the first 2+2) & with the prices I've been seeing lately, I've been thinking a little harder about getting one of my own. Wouldn't mind hearing a few pro's & con's about these tractors from some of their owners, either. Thanks - Mike

Yes there is stops you can put in there to dual them up on all 4 corners on the 2+2s.

The 7588 was not a 2+2. It was a full size 4 wheel drive along with the 7388 and 7788. They were to replace the 4386,4586 and the 4786.

The 7288 and the 7488 were the last 2+2's slated to be made. Only 16 of the 7488s were made before closing down the IH line in May of 85.

Weak spots on the 2+2 were the hinge point and drive line in the pivot. They were not heavy enough and woreout bad. That is the biggest down fall of the 2+2s.

Forgot to add that the 2+2s were made by IH and the full size 73,75,and 7788's were built by Steiger.

The 2+2 before the 7xxx series were NOT designed to run duals on the front, only the rear. Running duals on the front of those will cause big problems. Part of the design of the 7xxx series was to allow for front duals.

This is what I remember from one of Ken Updike's books...
